    An Assistant County Surveyor assists the County Surveyor in the maintenance of Public Land Survey System corners; reviews Certified Survey Maps and Subdivision Plats; files Plat of Survey maps; performs survey work for other government agencies and answers questions and addresses concerns from the public, County staff and local surveyors regarding land ownership and land surveying.  This full-time role is a professional, technical position typically working Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm.  

    Salary range: $49,670 - $63,835

    Essential Job Functions

    Assists the County Surveyor in carrying out the duties of the position as defined in Chapter 59.45 of the Wisconsin Statutes.

    Assists the County Surveyor in establishing, protecting, perpetuating and maintaining the monuments at the corners of the Public Lands Survey System (PLSS).

    Assists the County Surveyor to protect, perpetuate and maintain other geodetic survey monuments.

    Oversees the intake, indexing, scanning and filing of all incoming survey maps and tie sheets submitted by professional land surveyors as per Chapter 59.45 (1)(b).

    Maintains, protects and preserves records found in the County Surveyor files.

    Oversees the review of Certified Survey Maps submitted for review.

    Assists the County Surveyor in performing land surveying tasks as requested by other County Departments and other government agencies.

    Keeps well organized notes, records.

    Drafts maps and tie sheets.

    Acts on behalf of the County Surveyor during absences.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of Wisconsin laws, codes and provisions that relate to the practice of land surveying.

    Thorough knowledge of Chapter 18 of the La Crosse County Code.

    Thorough knowledge of legal descriptions and the establishment of boundaries.

    Thorough knowledge of land surveying mathematics.

    Thorough knowledge of the use of land surveying equipment.

    Thorough knowledge of route surveying, surveying of boundaries, and topographic surveys.

    Considerable knowledge of zoning law and ordinance regulations.

    Considerable knowledge of floodplain, shore land and wetland zoning regulations.

    Considerable knowledge of Geographic Information Systems.

    Considerable knowledge of construction site erosion control practices.

    Ability to follow complex technical oral and written instruction.

    Ability to keep accurate records and make reports.

    Ability to maintain effective working relations with County Officials and employees.

    Ability to coordinate and organize work with minimal direction.

    Ability to use Carlson Survey 2019 to do computations and draft maps.

    Training, Experience and Other Requirements

    Must be licensed as a Wisconsin Professional Land Surveyor OR be in the process of acquiring said licensure.
