    Major Duties

    This position reports to the Public Services Team Leader.  Serves as a Professional Land Surveyor responsible for the execution of land surveying work and as the localized point of contact for land surveying projects for the Chippewa National Forest land line location, land adjustment program and title claim resolution programs. Duties include:

    • ·         Assemble information to clearly present facts and findings in complex and varying title claims, trespass, and surveying problems and prepare claims for court procedures.
    • ·         Provide survey data to agency staffs, forests, engineering units, survey crews, etc., to provide for effective determination of National Forest boundaries.
    • ·         Establish and maintain unit files of U.S. General Land Office plats and field notes to inform determinations of National Forest System lands.
    • ·         Interpret and write legal descriptions and prepare plats and documents incident to land surveys.
    • ·         Serve as the Contracting Officer’s Representative on survey projects formally contracted to private firms.  Prepare specifications, and/or review surveying contracts to ensure consistency with agency policy and standards.
    • ·         Use programmable calculators and computer programs to work mathematical formulas and process data to perform surveying computations necessary for property corner and boundary line solutions.

    ·         Provide professional land surveying input for the planning and programing of forest land surveying priorities.

    NOTE - A Minnesota Professional Land Surveyor registration will be required within one year of selection.

    About the Forest

    The Chippewa National Forest is located in north central Minnesota, approximately 200 miles northwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul, and encompasses about 1.6 million acres which includes approximately 666,600 acres of checkerboard ownership with other public, private, and tribal lands interspersed. The Forest Supervisor’s office is located in Cass Lake, MN, with district offices in Blackduck, Deer River and Walker. The Forest was the first National Forest established east of the Mississippi River in 1908 and has a rich history, ranging from pre-contact times to the early logging era and CCC days.  A portion of the Forest is within the Leech Lake Indian Reservation and forest employees coordinate and consult closely with the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. 

    Water is very abundant on the National Forest and includes the Mississippi River headwaters region along with over 1300 lakes, 923 miles of rivers and streams, and 400,000 acres of wetlands providing world class fishing opportunities to visitors. Mixed northern conifer and hardwoods blanket the rolling uplands of the Chippewa.    Recreation opportunities abound with canoeing, camping, boating, swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and scenic drives throughout the area.

    Cass Lake is located four and a half hours north of the Twin Cities in North Central Minnesota. Cass Lake is home of the Chippewa National Forest, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and five of Minnesota's largest lakes.
