How to make a Bequest to the WSLS Foundation

A bequest is a gift made through your will or living trust. It is flexible, allows you to retain your assets during your lifetime, and can provide significant tax benefits for your estate.

1. Choose the Type of Bequest

Specific Bequest: Designate a specific dollar amount or a particular asset (such as real estate or securities).

Residual Bequest: Leave a percentage of the "residue" or balance of your estate after all other specific bequests and debts are paid.

Contingent Bequest: The Foundation receives the gift only if your primary beneficiaries do not survive you.

2. Consult Your Attorney

You should always consult with a qualified estate planning attorney to ensure your will or trust is legally sound and reflects your wishes.

3. Use Proper Legal Language

Provide your attorney with the following sample language to include in your will:

"I give, devise, and bequeath to the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors Foundation, Inc., located at 505 Cedar Valley Court, Delafield, WI, 53018, [the sum of $] OR  [% of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate] to be used for its general purposes [or specify a specific scholarship fund]."

4. Notify the Foundation

While not required, notifying the WSLS Foundation of your intent allows the organization to thank you and ensure they understand how you wish your legacy to be honored.
